Clyde Martin Ward died peacefully at home June 21, 2009. Clyde was born July 24, 1920 to parents, Clyde E. and Laura Routh Ward, in Sabinal, Texas. Clyde was married to Lorine Kram Ward for sixty-three years, who survives him. Clyde had valiantly battled cancer for the past two years.
Clyde was a life long resident of Austin, moving from Sabinal at age seven. He graduated from Austin High School after his service in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was one of what has been called the Greatest Generation, and he continued his service in the Texas National Guard for thirty-four years, retiring in 1970 at the rank of Senior Master Sergeant.
Clyde began his career with the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier in 1946, retiring as Supervisor of Letter Carriers in 1976. Clyde also was a member of the Southwest Football Officials Association, as well as an umpire and referee for local baseball and basketball events for many years. Clyde was an active leader in the Boy Scouts of America, and an avid fan and supporter of University of Texas athletic programs over a forty year period.
But Clyde's true passion was golf, and he caddied, played, and marshaled golf events for over seventy years. He was a member of the Austin Senior Golf Association, serving in various capacities for the past twenty-five years. And he was selected as the Association's first honorary life time member, with a tournament named in his honor. The ASGA article about this event may be seen HERE.
Visitation will be on Monday, June 22, 2009, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at Cook-Walden Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, 10:00 a.m., at Faith Lutheran Church in Austin. Interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville. The family requests that any donations be made to Faith Lutheran Church, Hospice Austin, or a charity of the donor's choice.
ASGA extends sincere condolences to Clyde's family and friends.
